LinguaTech's founding partners bring to the table many decades of experience with language-related software development for international markets.

Our areas of consulting expertise include:

  • Terminology Management and Translation Tools
Dr. Melby published seminal papers on multi-tier translator workbenches back in the early `80s. We were the first company to produce terminology management systems for personal computers (TAIM, then TerM, then Mercury™ and Termex™, and finally MTX™). We've consulted with several international corporations about how they can improve their translation process, and helped them build custom software to manage their terminology (including web-based and relational database approaches).

  • Electronic Dictionaries
We've produced electronic dictionaries and other multilingual references for Harraps (two of their bilingual dictionaries for use with MTX™), HarperCollins (the Collins On-Line™ series of dictionaries), Larousse (the Référence Electronique™ series), and other publishers. This also involves a good amount of experience with data compression, including a Master's Thesis on some theoretical aspects by Mr. Larsen. LinguaTech also holds a license to a very nice Base Form Reduction system that we can combine with Electronic Dictionary access for more advanced needs. We have versions of MTX™ that can be embedded in your application, or run on your web server (Windows or Unix).

  • Multimedia
We've designed and built best-selling language-learning software. Our pioneering LinguaBox™ system, released in 1991, incorporated videodisc, CD-ROM, a Japanese-capable Mac IIsi, and closed-circuit television for the English School market in Japan. LinguaBox™ evolved into Quick English™ for Mac and Windows, which has sold more than 600,000 CD-ROMs around the world (including over 500,000 copies in Japan alone).

  • Machine Translation
Dr. Melby is probably the world's foremost authority on the challenges of machine translation. There is a large amount of practical evidence (i.e., total failure to date) that fully-automatic, high-quality machine translation is impossible. Dr. Melby believes that there is also theoretical evidence in favor of this position as well. However, because we are ''atheistic'' about MT, we are well-positioned to advise companies impartially on which MT system might be best for their needs - because there are cases where MT can be utilized effectively. Dr. Melby has even developed a benchmark system for evaluating MT systems' performance on real texts.

  • SGML and XML
Dr. Melby has spent years developing ISO standards for representing terminology data in SGML and XML. For general background on this research, please visit www.ttt.org and read the information on the SALT project.
